2010 Supported Programs
SUPPORTING INDIGENOUS LEADERSHIP
Funds raised by The Long Walk benefit programs that focus on developing and supporting Indigenous people that promote culture and work for change in their communities.
The Long Walk continues to support four key programs in 2010:
Indigenous Students: On the Ball
The Long Walk will support the participation of up to 100 Indigenous students in Essendon Football Club's On the Ball program in 2010. The On The Ball program involves Year 8 classes spending a day at Essendon Football Club under the guidance of senior Essendon players and high profile netballers, trained to effectively deliver key harm prevention messages.

Indigenous Cultural Exchange
This program builds on our existing partnerships to offer cultural exchange between Indigenous communities as a way to
☻ Trade cultural knowledge to strengthen participating Indigenous communities.
☻ Develop self-esteem through cultural practice
☻ Support professional and economic development
Building on Essendon Football Club's existing fostership program with the Wadaye community, The Long Walk will co-ordinate an exchange between Victorian artists involved in the Koorie Heritage Trust's weaving programs, and the Wadaye Palngun Warangat (Women's Association). The exchange will be based on the cultural practices of basket weaving and fibre craft.

Get the Conversation Started
The Long Walk has a history of raising awareness with schools, from our 'hero visits' from Michael Long and Fellows from the Indigenous Leadership Fellowship in 2005, to the 'Get the Conversation Started Program' involving athletes and community leaders in 2006, 2007 and 2008. In 2010 'Get the Conversation Started' is being realigned to the national curriculum standards and will be offered in second semester to Victorian schools, with plans underway to introduce the program in other states.
Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership
The Long Walk is proud of its association with the Indigenous Leadership Fellowship, whose reach and pool of Fellows continues to grow with emerging leaders supported in Melbourne and Dandenong in 2010.
