HOSTING A LONG WALK IN YOUR COMMUNITY

GETTING STARTED

Hosting your own Long Walk is a fun, dynamic way to engage your community in an event that promotes reconciliation, equality and a united Australia for all of us to enjoy.

  • Work out when and where your group wants to walk - if you are going to use a public space, talk to your local council for advice.
  • Talk to elders in your local Indigenous community for their contributions and ideas.
  • Register your walk with us and we will send you a promotion pack.
  • Promote your Walk online, in newsletters and in the local media.
  • Invite your local community, schools, community organisations, Members of Parliament and local schools to join in.
  • Fundraise for The Long Walk – order merchandise to sell on behalf of The Long Walk. We have caps and mini footballs (signed by Michael Long) available.
  • Talk to us - Tell us how you are going, ask us for assistance, and send us photos from the day.

The Whitehorse Long Walk

18 March 2007

The Whitehorse Friends for Reconciliation and the Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place hosted their own "Long Walk" in March.

Hundreds of families from the Whitehorse community joined this very special event.

The community raised over $4,000 for The Sir Douglas Nicholls Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership through their efforts. Organisers plan to grow The Whitehorse Long Walk into an annual event.

The Orbost Long Walk
31 May 2007

Orbost Secondary College hosted a "Long Walk" for the Far East Gippsland Region in May.

Hundreds of primary and secondary school students walked 3.5km, carrying a great reconciliation banner, finished with a traditional smoking ceremony and a concert performance by local Indigenous band Jaam Fuze.
