Gippsland says NO to Violence
2004 Walker joins East Gippsland CommUNITY Walk Against Violence
19 November 2008
The East Gippland CommUNITY Walk against Violence
Bringing Indigenous and non-Iidigenous individuals, families, communities and agencies in Gippsland together to raise awareness of family violence.
As a Gunai man Alan Thorpe finds it important to support this initiative of the East Gippsland Indigenous Family Violence Regional Action Group. It raises awareness of some of the issues that were the reason for him joining Michael and the walk to Canberra back in 2004; to improve conditions for Indigenous Australians.
The Walk is an opportunity for everyone to demonstrate their commitment to ending family violence, a pervasive societal problem that has the potential to devastate individuals, families and communities.
The causal factors associated with family violence are complex with interrelated historical, social, political, spiritual, health, and alcohol and substance abuse issues, as well as socioeconomic and environmental conditions contributing to situations conducive to violence. As such, a collaborative and holistic approach between local community members, agencies and service providers is required to address these factors at a number of levels simultaneously.
The group aims to address the above factors through the relationships established in planning for the Walk and the subsequent ongoing partnerships to develop a more cohesive, culturally inclusive human service sector in the local East Gippsland and Wellington Shires. They are committed to ensuring that the Walk is a success, and to the ongoing goal of ending family violence to enable all people to participate socially and economically in their communities to achieve the best possible outcomes for themselves and their families.
Community gatherings, refreshments & Family Violence guest speakers
at each stop. The walk concludes with lunch & entertainment at Rosedale.
