The Long Walk welcomes the apology

19 March 2008

When Michael Long set out to walk to Canberra in late 2004, he did so to raise awareness of the injustices between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. He wanted to highlight the inequality in health, education and employment. As he and other walkers, black and white, walked together, it was an action which others could relate to. They were walking the walk. In November 2004 there was no invitation to Canberra from the then Prime Minister. But on Wednesday, February 13, 2008, Michael and many hundreds of other Indigenous people were invited to Canberra to hear the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, make a formal apology to the Stolen Generations

One of the things the Prime Minister said in his Apology address was “It is not sentiment that makes history, it is our actions’

The same could be said of Michael and his fellow walkers in 2004.   It was from their action that the Long Walk organization was born out of. The Long Walk is committed to the health and wellbeing of Indigenous Australians. We believe ALL Australians are entitled to a home, a job and an education. All the work we do is focused on achieving equality between Indigenous and non Indigenous Australians

The Apology by the Prime Minister is also an action which will make history.

The Long Walk acknowledges and welcomes the Apology.
