Host a Yarning Conference

A Yarning Conference brings students and community face to face with First Nations culture, history and truth-telling, led by Elders and community voices.

Schools and councils across Melbourne have hosted their own, inspired by The Long Walk. Here's how yours can too.

What does a Yarning Conference look like?

    1. Get in touch. Tell us who you are and what you're hoping to create.

    2. Build the program together. We help shape a day that fits your students, your community and your local Elders.

    3. Run the day. Workshops, yarning circles and stories, delivered by First Nations facilitators and community leaders.

    1. Truth before theory. Students hear history from the people who lived it, not a textbook.

    2. Real partnership, not a box ticked. A Yarning Conference builds an ongoing relationship with First Nations community, not a one-off assembly.

    3. Leadership in action. Older students often run sessions themselves, alongside their peers from partner schools.

    1. Schools. Primary or secondary, on your own or paired with neighbouring schools.

    2. Local councils. Council-run events can bring hundreds of students together in one place.

    3. Community organisations. Any group with the reach and the will to bring people together to yarn.
