The MCG holds a special place in the hearts of many. It’s a stage for great games and heartbreaking losses, champions and crowds. Above all, it’s a place that brings our community together, and there’s no one and no event that brings us together quite like Michael Long and his annual Long Walk.

Michael Long has achieved what many great leaders aspire to: winning hearts and rallying a nation in what continues to be a defining moment in the history of Aboriginal advocacy in Australia.

Looking beyond his own stellar sporting career, he has championed better health and education outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and strengthened the game for all by introducing the landmark racial anti-vilification policy.

Though the iconic Walk to the ‘G happens just once a year, its impact is felt year‑round through education programs, advocacy and smaller community walks.

At the City of Melbourne, we are committed to walking alongside Michael and his army of thousands. We continue to take meaningful steps on our journey to true reconciliation while honouring the unbroken spiritual, cultural and political connection Aboriginal people have maintained to this unique place for more than 2000 generations.

We are immensely proud to support the Long Walk and Michael’s legacy, and wish all participants a day of celebration as we walk side by side to the ‘G.
